HVAC UnitWhen shopping for a new air conditioner, you may have one thing on your mind: size and power. After all, a bigger unit has to be better, right? While it is easy to believe this to be true, you don’t want to make a decision you will regret in the long run.

Simply put, bigger is not always better when buying a new air conditioner. In fact, bigger than big a mistake that costs you a lot of money upfront as well as in the future.

There is no denying the fact that a bigger AC unit with more power has a greater ability to keep a space cool. But remember this: not every space is the same size.

The size of your air conditioner should not be based on the size of the unit and nothing else. Instead, you need to consider the size of the property it is cooling. In other words, the AC unit for a 1,000 square foot house does not have to be nearly as big as one for a 4,000 square foot house.

But won’t my home stay cooler if I opt for a larger unit? This is what many people believe to be true, despite the fact that it is a myth. Your goal should be to purchase an AC unit that is meant to your size home. This does two things:

  • Ensures that your home is kept cool during the warm summer months
  • Increases overall energy efficiency

In other words, if you select an air conditioner that is too big for your home, you are not going to receive the benefits of an energy efficient unit. A bigger unit will not keep your home any cooler. The only thing it will do is result in a higher energy bill on a monthly basis. Is that something you want to deal with?

Ask a Professional

At this point, you are probably worried about choosing an air conditioning unit that is too big for your home. Rather than make a poor decision, schedule an appointment with a company that specializes in HVAC installation. A service tech can visit your home, suggest the proper unit, and explain the pros and cons. At that point, you can make a confident decision.

If nothing else, you should always remember this: bigger is not always better when buying a new air conditioner. The size of the unit is based on the size of your home.
